The Niños del Arco Iris project

The main objective of the project is to care for deprived children in the Urubamba region, to offer education and to support that child in finding a worthwhile place in Peruvian society. Furthermore, the poorest families are supported in their daily lives.

In striving toward the main objective, there are a number of subsidiary objectives:

  1. Offering a home to 16 (ex-street) children in the Family house.

  2. A Day Centre offering a warm meal, medical care and a varied educational programme to about 120 deprived children.

  3. Vocational training; Cetpro. About 80 young people are working through a credits system for diplomas which will give them a future in the Peruvian labour market.

  4. Public information evenings and support for the development of a cooperative for the local people in the Day Centre.

  5. The Womencooperation. In the daycentre mostly single women learn to make products. By selling these products this should make them financially independent and that way get a change to a brighter future. Furthermore the women are informed about issues like hygene, familyplanning and dealing with alcohol.

  6. Medical and dental care facilities in the doctor’s and dentist’s practices.

  7. Psychosocial guidance for the children and their parents.

  8. Guests’ accommodation. The project offers the possibility to benefactors of the Kuychi Charity, guests and tourists to stay for one or more nights in one of the eight Rainbow houses.
  9. Working against unemployment. The programme imagined by Heléna calls for much personal support. A deliberate choice is made where possible to offer a good work place for local people. This deliberate choice is based on the vision to permit the surrounding local population to share in economic and moral revival as much as possible.

Working against unemployment is an important element of the project. In the same way, staff continuity is especially important for the guidance of the traumatised children and essential for the success of the whole project. In order to allow the family, the Day Centre, the CEO, the guest reception and everything else function properly, a number of Peruvian employees have been given permanent working contracts.

Benefactors’ contributions. All foreign workers on the project (mainly from Belgium and the Netherlands) are volunteers. They receive no salary or compensation, but are given food and lodging and bear all other costs themselves. Furthermore, all the Kuychi Charity volunteer workers located in The Netherlands and in Belgium, work for free. All PR and promotional materials are also received as donations.

The vision behind the objectives and therefore behind the project, rests on four main principles in human society. These principles are represented by the four letters of the word Arco:

  • Amor = Love
  • Respeto = Respect
  • Confianza = Confidence
  • Oro = Gold in the sense of "the goodness" in mankind.
