Three days of ceaseless heavy showers of rain have caused landslides, streams of mud and rivers in flood. In the narrow valley in which Urumamba and our project are situated all the water form the mountains assembles in the Vilcanote river, which cannot absorb this.

Besides the may tourists who have been evacuated from Machu Picchu almost 24.000 Peruvians have lost everything.

Their houses built of “adobes”( sand, clay and straw) break down by the water and collapse. Crops have been lost, roads are blocked up and the infrastructure has been destroyed.

A silent disaster and…. There is practically no news service. Fortunately our project that is situated higher in the mountains has been spared up till now.

On Tuesday the 26^th of January  the government declared a state of emergency for this region and Niños del Arco Iris  functions as a crisis-centre at the moment. Of course we do our utmost to help all the people who are so badly hit by this disaster.

All the materials we still had in stock in the container from 2007, mainly clothes, blankets and mattresses, has now been given to the people. The complete staff, including our doctor, are working to give the help the people need so much.

You can see that our help is indispensable and that all materials reach the right places. Meanwhile we are busy  filling up a new, once again sponsored, container and we specially ask for blankets.
